Cannonball Sauvignon Blanc 2024

Fragrance Pale straw-colored, this wine is refreshing to the eye and to the palate, with a bouquet of fruit and floral aromas that evoke spring in the glass.  

Tasting Notes Tangy and lively, with an explosion of sweet and sour citrus aromas — yuzu, bergamot, lemon caviar — layered with subtle peach blossom-like notes. Bright fruit flavors blend with the freshness of green papaya, lemongrass acidity, and slate-like mineral nuances that add tension and structure.  

Alluvial soils tie our vineyard sites together— beautiful places where Sauvignon Blanc thrives and develops its own flavor characteristics. We blend fruit from carefully selected parcels from these areas to capture every aspect of the varietal's true personality— a trait rarely found in a single vineyard. Our grapes encompass the expanse of the California coastal region, from the valleys of Mendocino to the rolling hills and riversides of Sonoma, and even the fog-shrouded Santa Clara Valley. Clonal selection is also essential to the varietal's inherent purity and expression of terroir: clone 1 provides classic citrus notes, clone 530 from the Loire River Valley adds texture and gooseberry notes, and the floral Musquet (clone 27) layers notes of core fruit and white roses.

We favor sites where a protective leaf layer shields the fruit from direct sunlight, allowing only dappled light to touch the berries. This slows ripening, helping retain terpenes and glycosidic compounds naturally present in the grape skins and flesh. During fermentation, these compounds transform into vibrant aromas and flavors, contributing to a pure grape-to-glass wine style. To optimize varietal character, we employ practices such as overnight harvesting, gentle early pressing, protection from oxidation, the use of expressive yeast strains, and long, slow fermentations at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks. In vintage 2023, we also incorporated a touch of sur lie aging for two parcels to enhance mouthfeel, while other parcels were racked off the lees at an early stage. The blending of these components created a harmonious wine that reflects the full spectrum of flavors and aromas for which the variety is renowned.

Cannonball Wine Company was founded in 2006 by longtime winemaker Dennis Hill and former attorney turned wine entrepreneur Yoav Gilat. Dennis is a Sonoma County native from a family with a long viticultural tradition in the region. The iconic label image of a child doing a ‘Cannonball’ refers to jumping into the water with your knees tucked into your chest in order to make a big splash and get your nearby friends as wet as possible.
